Academic buildings, the newest representing state-of-the-art facilities, help disseminate knowledge.
Open for Business
Rutgers Business School–Newark and New Brunswick opened a new facility in 2013 on the Livingston Campus in Piscataway as part of the campus’s redevelopment into a center of business and professional studies. The school fulfills an ever-growing need for a business education—as does the Rutgers School of Business–Camden in southern New Jersey and the Delaware River Valley.
A Helping Hand
Rutgers Law School, with locations at Rutgers–Newark (pictured here) and Rutgers–Camden, provides several pro bono services for the residents of its host cities. Faculty and students work together to offer help with everything from disability rights to reducing lengthy sentences for juvenile offenders.
Studious Students
Students in 1937 study in the library at Dana College, a school within the University of Newark, which became part of Rutgers–Newark in 1946. The main library at Rutgers–Newark is named after John Cotton Dana, considered the “first citizen of Newark” and a nationally acclaimed librarian who promoted open stacks so that patrons could peruse books rather than have to rely on librarians. A touchstone at Rutgers–Camden is the Paul Robeson Library, which was the first structure built on the campus after South Jersey Law School and College of South Jersey became Rutgers–Camden in 1950.
Worldview
Some of the best teaching takes place beyond the lecture hall or the campus. In 1996, professor Roger Locandro AG’60, GSNB’67,’73 took students at Cook College (today’s School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) to Exit Glacier, in the Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska, as part of a summer field expedition to complement the professor’s course on Alaska. Twenty years later, members of the faculty make more than 800 trips each year to more than 100 nations, and 1,400 students study abroad and visit 70 nations. Rutgers has more than 300 partnerships with institutions worldwide.
Search for a Cure
As doctoral candidates in 2013 at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, Jonathan Colin Guito GSBS’14 and Hyejin Shin GSBS’16 study Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpes virus.
